History

This style is originally derived from a 14th century latchet shoe from northern Europe, the Mary Rose was one of many styles found in the wreck of the Mary Rose ship, commissioned by Henry VIII; sunk by the French near the Portsmouth Harbor in 1545. Typical Mary Rose styles were popular in the mid- 1600's and included (lace) latchet, button and buckle styles. Earlier versions used a lace, toggle or button to close the instep strap. The Mary Rose style was worn across many classes from workers to royalty. The later Tudor and Elizabethan styles incorporated slashes.
