This necklace wound up in my hands by way of my husband's father who had it in his antique shop many many years ago. After showing it to the fine folks at Bally Bead (experts in African trade beads) here in Texas it is estimated to be 100 years old. All metal is Ethiopian (African) silver and strung on newer cording with barrel amber.

One day I received an email from a lady who knew a great deal of information about this piece as she traveled to Africa quite often. I was thrilled and honored to have her take the time to tell me all about the significance of the Ethiopian Engagement Pedant design. As she explained, "It is square to represent the Bible, has 12 dangles to represent the 12 Apostles, and usually ALWAYS has a stone in the middle to represent God the center of ALL things. I have brought many of these home on many trips to Africa. I have never seen one without the center marking, either a stone or a small bump." [In this case the pendant in this listing has no center bump or stone and never did.] Then she continued, "The quadrants represent a cross, probably more Orthodox. I think I mentioned I had never ever seen one without a [center] stone or bump. I am assuming it is Orthodox but still Christian." As far as the roped edge on just three of the dangles, "It represents the Trinity. I have only had that marking on 1 other pendant." So there you go...moving on.

This beautiful necklace is long, about 32" around. There are 20 amber barrel beads that measure 17mm x 22mm each. Between the amber are smaller silver prayer beads measuring 10mm x 14mm (21 total). The pendant is large, 2" x 4", and is hung from 2.375" of heshi. The tassels consist of 12 bugle-shaped tube pendants that hang about 1.75" from the prayer box. Three of the bugles have the roped decoration as stated above. On the back side there is some flawing in the metal but is stable. All in all it is in excellent condition without any broken or loose solder points. It has a lot of character, and I am very proud to offer it to you whether you love unique ethnic artifacts for your own wearing pleasure or whether you are a serious collector.

A note about shipping: This is a valuable piece, and I will take extra precautions to make sure it is delivered safely in your hands.
