Description

This beautiful Irish Linen christening gown was sewn entirely by hand with loving attention to every detail. From the tiny pin-tucks at each shoulder, to the perfectly double-scalloped hem stitch at the bottom, this christening/baptismal dress is a celebration of a precious new life.

The sleeves and collar are scalloped with a silky smooth hem stitch for baby's maximum comfort. The collar opening at the back is secured with a tiny abalone button.

The embroidered butterflies and tiny clover embellishments are so sweet, but the most unusual detail in this gown is the care taken to add inset panels at each hip. The added fullness to the gown is such a graceful way to make certain that your budding ballerina or football star is not restricted in any way on their special day.

Sizing is not marked on this vintage hand stitched piece, but it appears to be made for an infant, up to 12 months. With the garment laid flat on the table, these are the rough measurements: Arm pit to arm pit is 13 inches (for a total of 26 around the chest); Length from the shoulder to the longest point of the scalloped bottom hem is 18 inches. The sleeve opening (measured at the narrow point where the stitches are nipped in to give it a bit of definition) is 6.5 inches (3.25 flat diameter). The neck when buttoned is 12 inches. The opening at the back is 5 inches deep so when the button is undone it combines with the neck opening to give a full 22 inches of maneuvering room.

This piece is in beautiful shape with no notable blemishes to fabric, stitching or closures. It is certainly vintage if not antique. It was part of a private collection and has been stored with care for decades. It was recently been soaked in a mild solution of washing soda and fels naptha soap to remove whatever starches and dust that found it's way to the fabric even through it's wrappings. It appears completely restored to it's original glory, though a more thorough cleaning may be in order, at your discretion.
