Traditional Turkish ceramic art usually has meanings and symbols.
The pattern on this piece is called the Tugrakes (a maker of a sultan’s seal) spiral design, which is commonly misnamed as Golden Horn design because it was first excavated during the construction of Sirkeci (İstanbul) train station in the Golden Horn region (Istanbul-Turkey). It consists of spiral branches decorated with small rosettes of spring flowers and leaves. The spiral circles symbolize the hills of Istanbul as the city is build on the 7 hills. The patterns are drawn with a special relief technique that can be felt when touching.

The pitcher has a very unique and special shape that comes from the Hittite period 1600 BC, Cappadocia. It was originally used for serving wine as Cappadocia is also very famous with its wineries.
It is made from 4 different parts;
1. bottom, stand
2. circle
3. handle
4. spout

The circle shape in the middle symbolizes the sun which was the goddess of the Hittite Civilization and they had special wine drinking ceremonies.
They started the ceremony when the sun shined thru the hole. By putting the arm thru the circle and holding it on the shoulder, they poured the wine from the special pitcher.

This unusual shape is still being made in our town Avanos and the original ones that were found in archeological digs around the region are now on display in the Anatolian Civilization Museum in our capital, Ankara.
