Description

This christening gown is made from extremely finely woven, smooth, plain cotton cloth. Though the pieces is unadorned by embroidery or patterned finery, it is clear that every stitch taken was made with love and exquisite attention to detail.

The bottom hem is pulled thread (or "drawn") work, using threads from the same fabric to capture the hem and hold it in place. The draw-string ribbon fitting at the plain neck and arms are secured with more pulled thread work rather than with applied lace or other adornment.

Sizing is not marked on this vintage hand stitched piece, but it appears to be made for an infant, up to 12 months. With the garment laid flat on the table, these are the rough measurements: Arm pit to arm pit is 14 inches (for a total of 28 around the chest); Length from the shoulder to the bottom hem is just over 18 inches.

This piece is in beautiful shape. It is certainly vintage if not antique. It was part of a private collection and has been stored with care for decades.

It was recently been soaked in a mild solution of washing soda and soap to remove whatever starches and dust that found it's way to the fabric even through it's wrappings. It appears completely restored to it's original glory, though a more thorough cleaning may be in order, at your discretion.
