Description

CREATION OF THE DESIGNS: Karamatsu Larch shibori is created by heavily starching the fabric to make it stiffer, then folding, ironing and marking the placement of the half-circle designs. Each row or half circles is then hand stitched with a running stitch to form one line of stitching. In this piece each Karamatsu Larch has 4 rows of stitching. Once stitching is completed the thread is pulled up ever so tightly and knotted. It is then ready for the dye bath. Karamatsu Larch creates dark radiating lines within the circular shape evoking the form of branches of a tree. The hand stitching on this piece, which my husband created, took somewhere between 20 to 25 hours to sew. A mountain path or Yamamichi Shibori rolls around the bottom tier. This garment took somewhere between 29 to 34 hours to create, which includes cutting, sewing the skirt's sections, marking, binding, hand sewing, preparing and dyeing the cloth, rinsing, spinning, unbinding, ironing, and assembling the skirt. Due to the complexity of the process to make Karamatsu Larch it is rarely seen. In Japan it was winter work and dyed in the spring.

THE SKIRT: Luscious colorful Dupioni silk skirt. I think Dupioni has the most beautiful hand of all silks. When working with the fabric I listen to it's "bird wing" sound. Just love that.

This skirt may be hand washed, but as with most of our work we recommend dry-cleaning.

This hand-made skirt has an encased non-roll elastic/drawstring waistband made to fit most any size waist. Around the bottom is a heavier weight Raw Silk Noil Jacquard fabric trim. One right-side seam pocket. 6.5 yards around bottom of skirt.

In the process of dyeing, irregularities occur in our work and are in no way intended to be flaws but part of the beauty of the handmade and dyed garment.

••••• Please note: All monitors are different. Having been a graphic designer for 21 years in the corporate world, I have seen images look one way on my screen and very different on another. I make every effort to portray the exact color of my items in the photos. When the actual garment is held in your hand colors may appear slightly different than what was seen on your computer screen.
