Description

Item # 16-011

Candle Boxes were common on early farms. Before electricity, candles were used for light after it got dark in the evening. Most farming households made their own candles and stored them in boxes called candle boxes. This is a similar box although it probably did not hold any candles as there is no staining from candle fats as would be expected but the dimensions are consistent with a candle box.

This box was probably improvised from a general box from some other item. This opinion is based on inspection of the dovetail details which appear to be machine made as they are too narrow to have been made by hand in the traditional manner. This would place the box into the early 1900's when commercially made boxes were prevalent in packaging goods. The lid appears to be original with the box based on the similarity of the wood in the lid and the box, although the lid grooves in the box itself appear to be handcrafted. The lid looks more handcrafted than the box. The outer surfaces appear to have been stained and varnished at some undetermined point in the past.

Probably not a genuine candlebox but a nice vintage decorative box with age accent that would fit well into modern decoratie schemes where a little contrast or accent is desirable.

The box dimensions are 10 1/2 in long, 6 1/2 inches wide and 5 inches high
