Description

Charming small antique red earthenware jug or pitcher with Native American designs -- an Indian Ware pot from Clifton Pottery, Newark, NJ. This Arts and Crafts era art pottery was made between 1905 and 1911 (when Clifton turned to bathroom tiles).

The pot is red terracotta with crab like designs in two colors: a dark brown (looks blacker in my photos) and tan. The inside has a dark glaze.

The vase is marked Clifton in script on the bottom, and then on the side it has the shape number (230) and the area where the design came from. Some Clifton Indian Ware lists particular tribes; this one says Four M... Ruin, Arizona, which may refer to India Mesa Ruin. There's also a small symbol with a circle and lines (sun symbol, or maybe person).

The vase is in very good condition, with no chips or cracks. The unglazed pot does have a few darker areas.

Size: About 5 inches tall x 5 1/2 inches across (12.7 x 14 cm).
