Middle Bay Light is an etching. The Black and White print shown is number 20 of 30 prints in the edition. The edition number and color may vary depending on what I have left when you order. A secondary color option available for this print is in sepia and the sepia print photographed is number 13 of 25, again, number could vary based on availability at the time order is placed.

Each print has been hand inked, wiped, and printed from a copper plate that has been drawn on and etched in acid many times to engrave the lines and values into the metal. The prints were then dried, signed, and numbered. Although there is a small edition of the same image, each print is in essence an original work of art.

What inspired me to do an etching of the Middle Bay Lighthouse?

My dad, Gene Gleaves, grew up on Mobile Bay and as my siblings and I grew up it seems we never lived too far from dad’s home water, and for many years we had a sailboat. Dad taught us that to be out on the water was to breath in new life, leaving your worries behind to embrace life moment by moment. With every shift in wind direction, tack of the sails, turn of the wench, land sound of the waves lapping on the boat, you were transported to another place and time. It seemed almost magical. At night sleeping on the boat was hot and sticky, yet we were lulled sleep as we listened to the sound of the ropes gently clanging against the mast, as the boat rocked us gently from side to side. The hotter it was in the Summer sun the more we appreciated the breeze while sailing, and feeling the refreshing sprays of water on your body as you cut through the water and waves. Those were some of my favorite memories growing up.

We went on many boating trips in and out of Mobile Bay and the Middle Bay Light House is a visual marker between the Bay and Gulf waters. For boaters on their way to greater adventures, the Middle Bay Light House was a marker they looked for to know they were on their way to a new adventure. It is a welcomed site to boaters headed home.

Middle Bay Light House is a historic monument and has been restored and maintained by a very special historic society in Mobile, AL. Thanks to them, you can still see and enjoy it today. We always put out anchor near the lighthouse to take a swim and cool off before the final trek of our journey home. Sweet memories 

Artist Biography updated Oct 16, 2018

I graduated from the University of South Alabama with a BFA in graphic design in 1985. My primary areas of concentration in college, and in the years to follow, have been Drawing and Printmaking, although I also enjoy working in Pastel and Oil Painting. Over the years I have participated in many outdoor art shows, exhibited my work in local galleries and had my work accepted, exhibited, and awarded in various National Shows across the United States. One of my pastels, “Late Summer afternoon on the LeTort” was printed in a Fly Fishing Book published by Stackpole Books called “Selectivity”, written by a well-known author and fly fishing guide. I was also blessed to have a large color etching displayed in the Augusta National Club House, accepted and sold at the Master’s Golf Tournament from 1992-94. I was very fortunate my “Augusta National, View from Magnolia Lane” color etching was purchased by many patrons from Miami to California, Europe to South Africa as well as from the Far East. Truly humbled and honored, some of my patrons were past Master’s champions.

I enjoyed the opportunity to teach Youth and Adult, Drawing and Printmaking classes at the Danville Community Art Center in KY from 2011 to 2015 until my husband and I moved back to Ohio. We currently reside in Beavercreek, OH where I work full time in my home studio and have my work displayed in the ARTery Gallery, and Village Artisans Gallery the Dayton area.
