Description

By Naomi

Inspired by origami and other paper building techniques, these mugs are constructed of cut and folded porcelain slabs, rolled as thin as I can manage (around 1/16 inch) to maximize translucency. They seem impossibly delicate, but they're actually surprisingly robust -- we use them daily. This smaller version measures about 4.5 inches tall and 3 inches in diameter at the top and holds about 12 oz (1.5 cups), just the right size for a cappuccino.

About my process:

All of my work is hand-built, which in ceramics terms means I use a variety of techniques -- pinching, coil building, and slab building -- that don’t involve a potter’s wheel. Handbuilding has a peaceful, meditative slowness to it, and it creates forms that are often soft, uneven, asymmetrical, and imperfect, all qualities I appreciate. I find most of my inspiration in seashells, coral, seed pods, minerals, succulent plants, and other forms and patterns of the natural world.

Like most of my work, these mugs are made from a clay I formulate myself by combining porcelain ceramic clay with cellulose paper fibers. This “paperclay” is substantially stronger before firing -- making it easier to manage when rolled into very thin slabs -- and after firing (when all the paper fibers have burned out) is indistinguishable from porcelain alone. They are coated with a thin, glossy transparent glaze and fired to over 2200* F for durability.

Everything in our shop is entirely lead free and food-, microwave-, and dishwasher-safe, though hand washing is recommended.
