Description

Measures: 7" tall X 2 1/2" wide X 2 1/4" deep

When you see this in person and feel it - personality - You will understand what it is.

I have always admired the ability of an individual to take a piece of wood and create wonderful items from furniture to very detailed figures or animals. I have always surrounded myself and others with primitive wood statues from all over the world and this very special Chinese fellow is one of my favorites.

The detail on this statue is amazing and I have always liked that parts of the wood were left - natural - uncarved. It's as if the artist was trying to describe that no matter how old we get - our life is never completely "carved out" and that there is always room to do more.

This is a representation of the Chinese Taoist deity - Shou-xing (also called Shou Lao) - or the god of longevity. Everything about this statue is intended to be representitve of long life and immortality.

The staff he holds is a peach tree twig and the wood he is made of comes from the peach tree as it represents immortality. The staff is meant to ward off the destructive or dangerous influences that can shorten a life.

His body characteristics are associated with long life or older age. His exaggerated head size represents his vast wisdom and his long beard is meant to show he has lived a long life. He smiles because he is undemanding and appreciates the value of a long heathly life.

These type of pieces are generally given - to recognize an appreciation to an older member of the family for all they contribute to the family and often kept in homes to worship or remember the lessons and values of elder members of the family.

True story.

It is signed on the bottom - faintly in Chinese. There is no notable damage and his staff is original. This would be a great item to hand down from generation to generation.
