Polka Dots on a Paris Street, Geometric Pattern, Black and White, Circles

What happened here? Did the backing material somehow disappear while the dots remained behind? I'm not really sure, but it makes an interesting dynamic. This was photographed near the Gare de Lyon in Paris, a busy train station with lots of people buzzing every which way. Somehow this tantalizing little scene opened up for my camera.
