Description

Was $100, now %90. Are you tired of the endless procession of poorly finished pens with shoddy hardware? This half-twist rosewood ballpoint may be what you seek. It features the top quality rhodium finished hardware with black titanium detailing. Both these durable metals out-wear and out-live any others. The rare and unusual Honduras rosewood burl barrel is impeccably finished with 32 layers of acrylic finish. The pen uses Parker-style refills available at stationers and other shops around the world.

Please note you can custom order this and other pens with various hardware and types of domestic and tropical hardwoods. Enquiries are welcomed.

This one-of-a-kind ballpoint pen features increasingly rare Honduras rosewood burl, sourced many years ago in Belize. Wood for its barrel was lathe-cut, and sanded on my lathe and by hand through 26 abrasive applications using grits from 120 to 12,000. I applied 32 coats of acrylic (CA) finish to achieve an exceptional finish. After sanding, I polished the piece with tripoli and white diamond micro-abrasives and hand buffed them. The glassy surface is durable, deep, hard and waterproof.

Honduran rosewood (Dalbergia stevensonii) grows primarily in Belize and Honduras in Central America. Its rare, complex burl wood is prized for delicate bird's-eyes and pin rays, and for its rich, deep, reddish-brown colour. This rosewood has always been sought after as a tone wood for use in instruments, for high-end furniture, and for decorative and turned objects. Over-harvesting has resulted in diminished supply and rapidly accelerating prices, if it can even be found in the market place.

Each writing instrument I make is an individual project, not part of a production run. This allows me to give full attention to pieces you see. I use rare or unusual woods for many of my writing and shaving instruments, but do not purchase any categorized as endangered in the Red Book or covered by CITES Appendix I (Convention on International Trade of Endangered Species).
