Description

An elegant choice in subtle hues of creams, pinks, lilac, blues & beige/golds and perfect for the Wedding Season or balmy summer evenings, our unique andaluchic designed shawl is hand woven using traditional wooden looms, making an elegant and original gift or indulgence for you!

Using fibres from the agave plant, this unusual material has many of the qualities of raw silk in both how it feels to the touch, how it moves and also works in harmony with the heat and cold. The warp (undertone colour) works beautifully with the weft (the multiple colours woven over and through the warp) and together the fabric has a subtle, reflective sheen which is impossible to capture in a photo. Unlike silk, however, this fabric is ecological and vegan in that it is made from plants. Even more unusual, it is machine washable at 30º Celsius / 86º Fahrenheit (cool wash) and ironed on a cotton setting, making it a really durable and practical choice. Neither will the fabric lose its colour or beautiful sheen after multiple washes. It can be dry-cleaned but it really doesn´t need to be.

This item can be used as a shawl, scarf or wrap pashmina-style and is usable throughout the year, although some of our customers have used it as a table runner, wall hanging or decorative fabric at the foot of their bed or instead of a headboard!

We have also made matching evening bags using the same material. Each bag is lined and can be opened and closed using the loop fastening over the hand crotched button. It can be hand sponged to be cleaned, avoiding wetting the tassel, or dry-cleaned. We don´t recommend machine washing the bag as it will ruin the tassel. Each bag is an original, but all combine the same colour combinations and overall look as the shawl without being identical.

When worn together they make a stunning and original combination, but we also give you the option to buy separately, just look at the drop down menu for prices.

HISTORY

It was the arrival of Muslims into Spain in 711 that eventually revolutionised weaving in what is now the Iberian Peninsula (today´s Spain and Portugal). Initially wooden looms required 2 craftsmen, one peddling and each manually “throwing” the shuttle backwards and forwards across the loom. This was later replaced by the automatic shuttle which was controlled by one single weaver sitting in the middle of the loom, operating it with pedals. This caused outrage in its day, as 1 out of every 2 weavers no longer had a job, a far away echo of the mechanisation and more latterly robotisation of our own jobs today. By the end of the Spanish Reconquest in 1492, Al-Andalus´ thriving silk and complex damask weaving industry was already in decline. This was partly due to the loss of crucial know-how, having been a speciality of Muslim Spaniards who were forcibly separated and displaced within Spain to prevent rebellions against the new status quo. This uneasy arrangement came to an end when Muslims who had not converted to Christianity were eventually thrown out of Spain in 1610. Such a loss of manpower and knowledge inevitably resulted in a declining industry as well as an inferior product. Another threat was direct competition from the Low Countries (today´s Belgium and The Netherlands), then The Hapsburg Empire, a hub of high quality weaving reliant on Spanish wool and an Empire into which Spain was swallowed for 2 centuries through a dynastic quirk.
