Description

There is no other book like this one.

This book is a total mystery when you first encounter it -- entirely black with black-tape binding, it is small and worn on the cover and edges, with no title or picture or author or anything whatsoever. It looks like a small datebook or journal. So when you open it, you are surprised to find it is a book at all, and especially one that is so seminal to the history of the study of law.

"A Digest of the Law of Partnership" is certainly written in lawyer-ese, so much so that by the second page of the introduction I was nearly lost, but nevertheless intrigued. Sir Frederick Pollock, who does not call himself a Sir in this book but is a prominent figure in history anyway, has written a work unlike any before it--and he is sure to include this in the first few sentences. He name-drops then, other law writers of the day, and notes that he is writing this text to fill a need he feels is not filled at that time -- a concise book on the "law of partnership." The partnership Sir Pollock is talking about he defines in Part 1 of the book, which doesn't start till about a third of the way through the book--that is truly how long the introduction is! He says so much in the introduction it seems the book will continue on in that way for the whole thing, really, until you get to page 1, which is really about page 60 or something.

Partnership in this book is legally defined as "the relation which subsists between persons who have agreed to combine their property, labor, or skill in some business, and to share the profits thereof between them." The following chapters or "articles" define and describe the laws and issues and ideologies around different aspects of partnerships, including what creates the decision, what benefits occur to both parties, what happens when one partner wrongs the other, how to go about both parties wishing to dissolve the partnership, what is included in your basic partnership agreement when there are more than financial rewards involved, what other factors inform the decisions and contracts, etc. Part 2 is specifically concerned with the dissolution of partnerships, as that piece can be a whole category or book in itself at times. Think of the divorce lawyers of today, for instance.

So if you are in business with a partner, looking to merge businesses, want to understand this aspect of business or are simply curious about law in general, want to learn something new or just to read a text in physical form that is only available now online in digitized version, then you should buy this.

You will also look really cool walking around with such a tiny, black, old and mysterious book about the size of your hand. What in the world could it be? If you own it and read it, you'll know.

And here's the straight information you may be looking for:

-Full title: A Digest of the Law of Partnership.
-Author: Sir Frederick Pollock, of Lincoln's Inn, Esq., Barrister-at-Law, late Fellow of Trinity College, Cambridge; Author of "Principles of Contract at Law and in Equity."
-Format: Hardcover, first edition, limited edition
-Condition: Fragile but wonderful! Signed with a few small notes (as pictured), not many.
-Publisher: F. H. Thomas and Company, St. Louis
-Copyright: F. H. Thomas and Company 1878
-Date published: 1878
-Provenance: This has no information on it whatsoever on the cover or spine or anything, so I picked it up in a discard pile at a book donation for its mystery. This was winter 2015.
-Pricing: This writer's works are influential and still read today, but only in digitized versions online. This work is not available anywhere else in any edition or condition whatsoever. It is therefor extremely rare and valuable, not just vintage. The book is also considerably old, a good deal over a century, which makes it even more treasurable.

I’m so happy with this gorgeous book! I couldn’t be happier and love doing business with Colleen. She finds the greatest treasures and takes every effort to research and provide extensive details for each of her treasures!

Hemans was such a powerhouse when female writers were still fighting for a voice in a masculine world of literature. I’m so grateful to have such a special piece of history.

Thank you for the gorgeous wrapping and hand-written note. The arrival of my book truly feels like a special present.

FAQs

Absolutely! I'm willing to do anything to get this book to you, but I will not write on it. If it is not in the condition you want, I know preservation techniques and will certainly oblige as best I can. You just need to let me know.
I will wrap the book any way you want. It is special and so are you, you deserve it! I will also write cards, include photographs, anything you'd like that would make this transaction more, well, you.
I won't tell you how to care for your book, but as to how they are cared for now, they are housed in two places -- some are wrapped in plastic in my main room in the part of the house that used to be a quaint B&B, lined on lovely old wooden bookshelves; others are stacked in piles or leaning on cool, creative and different bookends all round the room, and all are given care, attention, and kept away from my dog :)

Others sit in my library, in built-in authentic 1800s wooden and glass-door library shelves that line the walls in a secluded room in a historic home on the shore. With vintage, warm lamplights over the tiny marble fireplace, the library's windows catch plenty of sunlight--the books are in good homes and will arrive undamaged.
If the book comes later than expected this does not mean it was sent late. Every book is sent within 1-3 business days, unless one of the days is a Sunday, then it could be an extra day. This applies to International orders as well, but they might take longer to get to you than in-country orders. If there is a problem, please bring it up with UPS or see Etsy's policies.
I am more than willing to hunt down a specific book for you. This can take time, however, and would be a matter of personal back-and-forth on the site so you would have to keep in contact. There is no guarantee. I'm good at finding things however, and if I cannot find it to sell to you myself I will direct you to where I can find it online, if I can.

Important to note, however, that I may have it in my holdings already so it ALWAYS helps to check in with me. Listings come up continually, and it may just be waiting here to get processed and put up.
Contact me directly via the site and I will do my absolute best to help correct it. There should be no problems.
Always willing to make new friends and take on new jobs or opportunities -- this business does not stop me from working a full or part time job, and I am currently looking, so please contact me! Dempseylynch@gmail.com. I am definitely interested in talking with you and love meeting new people (especially book lovers of course).
Sure! Although the books are priced the way they are and are worth that amount based on a lot of factors (condition compared to others available online, if there are any available online or if it is the only one, age and whether it is signed or special in some way, etc.) I am always willing to hear you out as to why you think the books price is off, and work with you as best I can. I cannot guarantee the price will change, that is bad for my business, but I will listen to you. Don't be afraid to reach out. The worst that can happen is I will say no.

I put the reasons behind my pricing method for each item at the end of the listing so check that out if you're curious too :)
