Description

Antique 1800s flat top trunk manufactured by Likly, McDonald & Rockett of Cleveland, Ohio.

Antique trunks, also called traveling chests, were originally used as luggage for extended trips by stagecoach, train, or steamship. Flat-top trunks, or steamer trunks, were designed to makes these pieces of luggage easier to store on steamboats or trains.

As with all trunks this age it has developed a wonderful patina with the only visible signs of age being some decay on the leather straps and the usual scrapes and bumps that are to be expected from sea travel. Fortunately it still has all the original hardware intact too, which are in good working condition. The piece is adorned with rust-free heavy metal accents and corners and the lid hinges still work perfectly. The outer casing is still solid and all the hardwood slats are intact and the wear is fitting for its age of over 100+ years, with no worm or rot.

The trunk also boasts 4 metal caster wheels that still work, on its bottom. The true beauty of this piece is the inside of the lid though, with the original art print still of such vivid design and colour.

Luckily no one has taken it upon themselves to repaint this piece which can dramatically affect the look and resale of similar pieces. It has been relined with a jaccquard, which can be easily removed if your aim is to restore. The pressed metal snakeskin is another great feature of this beautiful antique.

These trunks are hard to come by in Australia, don't miss out!

Width - 430mm
Length - 720mm
