Description

Item # 13-104

Vintage Hudson Seal Fur muff estimated to have been made in the 1920's or thereabouts.

A popular ladies accessory during the early 1900's when fur was in fashion and also very good at keeping hands warm.

The designation of "Hudson Seal Fur" refers to muskrat fur dyed to look like seal fur. The term "Hudson Seal Fur" was patented in 1907, presumably by the Hudson Bay Company.

The muskrat was introduced to Europe to satisfy the large demand for fur in the early part of the 20th Century. They are now pests in parts of Europe and are subject to control by trapping, poisoning and hunting.

The muskrat fur is very warm and is still used to make the winter hats for the Canadian Mounted Police.

The muff is in good condition with no worn areas or other damage.
The plastic ring ( possibly Bakelite) is in good condition The muff does not have a zippered internal compartment as later versions do. This indicates earlier manufacture.

Nice item for use, display or to decorate with.

The size is 15 inches wide by 12 inches high and abou 4 inches thick. The ring is 3 1/4 inch in diameter.
