I am delighted to offer a rare antique etching, The Falconer, a portrait of Samuel Northcote Jnr., three-quarter length, holding a falcon, mezzotint, titled, published by Smith, 1797.

Approx sizes: Plate size 50.5 cm x 35.5 cm with visible plate mark. Visible size including mount 67 cm x 51.5 cm. Frame 74 cm x 58.5 cm.

Mounted to plate line with a thin border. Paper ageing and foxing to text area in keeping with age. Unexamined out of frame but with no visible marks to image. Held behind glass in an old heavy ormolu decorated frame in good condition.

Mezzotinter, and occasional portrait and landscape painter; father of Samuel William Reynolds II and Elizabeth Walker; apprenticed to C.H.Hodges; taught the mezzotinters Samuel Cousins and David Lucas. Patronised by Samuel Whitbread, who sorted out his financial affairs. Exh. RA 1797-1827. In Paris 1825-28, exhibiting several mezzotints at the Salon of 1827.

Samuel Northcote (British; Male; 1743 - 1813)
Biography: Of Plymouth; son of Samuel Northcote, watchmaker, and brother of James the painter.
