Description

Antique sewing nursing rocker low armless wooden Victorian Queen Anne style Pennsylvania fiddleback sewing nursing rocker rocking chair

Antique - 1880-1890 nursery sewing rocking chair

Rare wooden fiddle back sewing nursery rocker farm country Victorian cottage fireside fireplace rustic decor

Hand crafted and marked, I believe it is walnut and is hardwood, American in origin likely Pennsylvania

I passed this by an appraiser online who advises that this chair dates to 1880 to 1890. It appears to be hand crafted. The name M Miller, inscribed on the bottom, would likely be the person that hand crafted the chair. The chair is a Nursery or Sewing Rocker. These type chairs were produced a little lower to the floor and with no arms, so the woman of the house could feed their babies easier, and also do their mending and sewing, with easy access to their sewing baskets. Market value is $800-$850 depending on condition.

This armless rocking chair has a nice worn look and patina. The original paint/ lacquer of light walnut honey brown is interrupted nicely by lighter stains, natural wood, light pocks and scrapes. There is a light split on the fiddle piece, if you look very closely but the piece is intact. No missing pieces. I left the nail out, see picture, but it can easily be hammered in. I do not see any glue marks.

The chair is put together by dowels. There are about 2 very old nails that appear to be machine made, on either side of back of the seat. They were likely added at a later date. There appears to have been or are two smaller ones at either side of the seat near the front and one on one side of the front leg. The nails are old and appear to be of the same age.

The chair is sturdy and does not wobble and can actually be used or would be a lovely place to place a throw, quilt, blanket, hat, or as a simple statement piece in your favorite nook.

Measurements:

21" tall floor to seat top
17 1/2" seat to back top

Turned back sides, front splat and front legs. Plain legs and splat at the back.
The rocker floor rails are longish and slant inward from 13" distance apart at the front and 7" at the back which seems clever and the chair does not freely move like some rockers that can move with the lightest push by a finger but it does indeed rock and is quite stable.

Seat is stout at 1 1/2" thick
14 1/2" floor to seat top
13" - 14 1/2" wide
14" deep with usable space 13 1/2"

Back width 17 3/4"
Back middle 14"
Back bottom 12 1/2"

Back middle fiddle piece 12 1/4" tall and 6 1/4" at widest
The turned back side rails Are about 12 3/4" tall with the back top piece being 4 1/4" over that

As with any vintage or antique item this item has blemishes as described and while perfectly aged is not perfect. If you need more pictures or aphave questions please ask.
