Description

These kanji characters are pronounced 'jiyujizai' which refers to a way of engaging in an activity that is completely free. That is, the person doing it does it with such prowess, such finesse, that it seems as though they are doing it effortlessly, that they embody the spirit of that discipline or role. Of course there is almost certainly a great amount of dedication and sweat behind that! The characters are written in the traditional way, vertically from right to left.

This expression can apply to a plethora of contexts- a performer who seems to inhabit their role, or a martial artist, or a chef.......you can relate it to anyone, including yourself. And if you aren't at such a level yet in your particular practice, you can use these characters to inspire yourself to keep on the path.

I've stated it as 'In Control and In the Flow' in this listing's title, but please use that for reference only. In fact, there's no succinct, definitive way to translate this idiom. Rather than think of an exact equivalent in English, it's far more fruitful to feel the way of thinking and seeing behind it. It's about immersing yourself in something and thereby developing a proficiency and being in a state of control of your mind and actions.

In the west in recent years the concept of flow has gained currency and being in a state of flow is an aspect of the message in these characters.

Whatever you devote your time to, you can draw inspiration from this work if you're striving to hone the qualities I mention above.

Be true to yourself in identifying your passion and work to make it second nature so that you can express yourself through it without constraints!

Four-character kanji compounds like this are referred to as a yoji jukugo (四字熟語). There are hundreds, and they're required study for Japanese children. They appear on school entrance exams, as well as in the conversation of well read people. They are linguistic gems, conveying meaning compactly, colorfully and profoundly.

They are often infused with references to such things as classical Chinese and Japanese literature and history and Buddhist precepts.

Brush artist Hiro created this work at his studio in Kyoto by hand. Then we scanned it and put the characters on a backround that resembles handmade Japanese washi paper, so that even if you use plain white paper, you can effortlessly get a warm, traditional look.

The closeup photo shows the details of Hiro's red name stamp in the corner and you can see the quality of the backround as well.
