Description

Incredibly rare and special 1930s Madeleine Vionnet day dress! Cream textured weave crepe with incredible construction. Bias cut with many seams and squares. Neckline is fitted with hooks and eyes across the shoulders and one single hook and eye across a fold in the center neck. Lovely shell shape. Matching tie weaves through two openings in the fabric. Short sleeves, with shape given to the shoulders via several unique right angle seams. French darts and flattering column seamwork at the sides of waist. Vionnet's iconic figure-hugging bias cut throughout! Designer label with thumbprint and graphi, "déposé" in small text beneath name and stamped number 67606 on back of label. Breathtaking!!! Very rare !

Madeleine Vionnet is perhaps the most influential and iconic designer of the 1930s, and one of the most influential of the 20th century. Called "the architect among dressmakers", she is famous for her bias cut technique, displayed beautifully in this design, in which the fabric is cut on the bias at 45 degrees in such a way as to expand and contact to conform to the wearer's body. Her designs were luxurious and sensual with a modern, simple look that belied their expert, careful construction. Her gowns were worn by Marlene Dietrich, Katherine Hepburn, Joan Crawford, Greta Garbo, and other huge stars of the era. She retired in 1939 and donated most of her designs to the Musee de la Mode et du Textile in Paris. It is extremely rare to find examples of her work for purchase, in particular her day dresses.

LAYAWAY is available for all items, please message me for details.

Measurements:
Variable due to bias cut
Bust: 34" - 44"
Waist: 26.5" - 36"
Hip: 34" - 46"
Length: 48.5"

Condition: Structurally excellent, and very very wearable. Beautiful and fascinating. Does have many small faint brown discoloration spots, scattered mainly on right sleeve, back right shoulder, and right side at waist. Some other small spots elsewhere and faint discoloration to neck tie. I have not cleaned this piece as I did not want to disturb such a piece of history. However I do feel that any discoloration should respond very well to a professional cleaning should you wish to clean or wear it. Message me if you would like closeups.

Returns and exchange details

All sales are final. Guermantes Vintage does not accept returns or exchanges. If you feel an item has been grossly misrepresented, please message me.

Please keep in mind that all items are vintage, used, and sold AS IS. I describe items to the best of my ability. Some very very minor flaws may not be noted. If you would like additional details or photos of any of my listed items please ask before purchasing. Please keep in mind that colors may vary based on computer monitor.

I cannot predict how a vintage item will wear and will not accept returns if an item becomes damaged after it has been received by the buyer. This applies especially to antique items, which can be especially delicate and prone to breakage. I try to estimate the wearability of my older items but cannot guarantee this. Antique silk should be considered especially delicate.

I do not allow refunds or returns based on size so please check measurements carefully and ask all questions before purchasing. Items may be pinned to fit dress form.

Additional policies

RESERVES:
If you would like to reserve an item, please contact me. Keep in mind that by reserving an item you commit to buying that item. A non-refundable deposit may be required for holds.

A NOTE ON CLEANING:
I consider all pieces sold here to be artifacts of an earlier time. As such I work to preserve and document them for future generations as best I can. I personally take a conservator's approach to the preservation of these textiles and recommend that they be cleaned and laundered as infrequently as possible.

FAQs

Layaway is available for all items. Please contact me to set up a payment plan.

All layaway payments are nonrefundable, and if a payment is late layaway may be terminated, or a daily late fee applied.
For best fit I recommend comparing measurements given to those of a similarly cut garment you own that fits you well.

1920s items should fit loosely. In general I recommend at least 2" of wiggle room between your measurements and dress measurements.

I do not allow refunds or returns based on size so please check measurements carefully and ask all questions before purchasing. Items may be pinned to fit dress form.
All prices are firm. I do not offer discounts or coupons. However, I am happy to offer layaway on any item. Please message me for info.
Please contact me prior to purchase if you would like to insure your order during shipment. Insurance is not included in the listed postage cost.
