Description

This unique collector's item is a handmade artist book that pays homage to the Tibetan custom of printing and hanging wind-powered protective prayer flags in environmentally sensitive areas to ensure good luck to residents and travelers.
It is a Tibetan custom to harness the kinetic energy of the elements of air, water and fire to help generate good luck and circulate prayers.
When gusty breezes rustle the flags, the wind empowers the prayers to create a safe environment in dangerous high altitude terrains.
The accordion fold book contains three hand-colored reproductions of Tibetan prayer flags and a long life amulet from my collection of over a hundred and fifty woodblocks printed on indigenous lokta paper I gathered during the six years I lived in the Himalayas in the 1960s. The pop-up centers emphasize the importance of the central image.
A folded booklet is included which has a short travel narrative about my visit to a Nepalese Paper Studio in Kathmandu where I found the 4-color woodblock print on the cover. Hand cut and colored interior pages, canson and lokta papers. The edition is limited to eight. Signed.

More on the images: The most common central image is the flying horse or wind horse which carries a bundle of precious jewels on its back. Four animals—serpent, deer, lion and dragon—guard the four directions. Numerous prayers and special symbols fill in the background.
The blocks are printed on cotton flags then stitched to ropes to stretch between trees, rooftops and temples. Some crossed dangerous rivers or the summits of high mountain passes.
This unique collector's item celebrates Tibetan arts and culture.
