ERNST WAHLISS Pitcher With Lid - olive, yellow & brown. Made in Austria 1924, Jugendstil Art Nouveau style floral design. Very collectible!!

Description

This lovely hand painted ceramic pitcher/creamer with it's original lid was crafted in Austria by the ERNST WAHLISS ALEXANDRA PORCELAIN WORKS. Circa 1863-1925.

It is inscribed on one side with a cute German verse which states "ISS WOHL, TRINK WOHL, THU W0HL".....in English it means EAT WELL, DRINK WELL, BE WELL.

I believe that this piece was made in 1924. Refer to the Roman Numeral IV mark on the underside of the vessel.

The pitcher and lid are glazed in olive green, highlighted with a chocolate brown handle, spout and rims.

The vessel and lid are glazed on the inside in a mustard yellow color.

The saying, which is in capitol letters, is light brown on the mustard yellow background.

On the reverse side is a lovely Jugenstil Art Nouveau style flower in mustard yellow, accented with the chocolate brown.

The term "Jugendstil" (in German, "Youth Style") focused on a design style known as Art Nouveau, which was then the most fashionable type of decorative art.

Jugendstil evolved in two phases: a pre-1900 phase dominated by floral motifs and a post-1900 phase, marked by a tendency towards abstract art.

Background on the Ernst Wahliss Company:

Ernst Wahliss opened his ceramics business in Vienna in 1863, and achieved great success in making and selling decorative wares.

He later established branches in London and Berlin, and in 1897, bought the Amphora ceramic factory at Turn-Teplitz, Bohemia, known for producing porcelain.

Wahliss died in 1900 and left the firm to his two sons, Hans and Erich.

The brothers' extended the company's range of earthenware and porcelain to include the distinctive serapis-fayence.

They traded under the name Alexandra Porcelain Works "Ernst Wahliss" from 1905-1925.

The company closed around 1925.

The pitcher and it's lid are in very good condition for their vintage age. There are no chips, cracks or other flaws seen.

There is evidence of crazing which gives the piece additional character.... in my opinion.

Often the lid is missing, but not on this lovely collectible vintage piece.

It has multiple uses, use as a single serving of tea or coffee, a creamer, syrup or honey container, etc.

The pitcher is 5.1/2" tall (includes lid); 5.1/4" wide (from spout including handle); 10" in circumference (at base).

Please note, I do my best in describing items accurately and provide probable time periods and any flaws or imperfections seen.

Please review the photos for further consideration as they are important to the overall condition of this lovely piece.

Per our shops' policy, vintage items are not refundable.

Thank you for shopping at Now and Then Connection, we appreciate your business..... and we always keep your satisfaction in mind.
