Here is a great fly with a fantastic challenge! Ant are terrestrials that sometimes end up in the water. When there doesn't seem to be any other insects being eaten on the surface, then the ant is the fly to use for your efforts. Often times, trout and bluegill will gently swallow an ant when cast by the shore and allowed to float with the current. It can be hard to detect a take due to the gentle swallow, to pay attention! Once caught, have fun bringing in the fish on a small size 18 hook! I make these flies out of dry fly dubbing and hackle, and apply dry fly floatant so it will float a little longer. I like to use this fly while I wade, always casting down stream to places near the shore where fish may be hiding. It is great fun!
