Amber is an organic gem (not mineral), a fossilized tree resin (not a sap), known and appreciated for its natural beauty throughout history. Of great value in jewelry along with pearls and coral. Between 25 and 30 million years old. Amber comes from different trees: in Europe from a pine tree (Pinus Succinifera), in America from a leguminous (Himaenea Courbaril), in Mexico known as Guapinol.

Sometimes there are insects or plant matter trapped in the amber, caught in the resin as it was being exuded from the trees, many millions years ago. Different kinds of insects like spiders, mosquitos, ants. Marine microfossils, leaves and flowers, seeds, feathers, hair and many other small organisms. Some of the most rare fossils found in amber include scorpions, frogs, and even lizards.
Amber has helped entomologists, paleontologists and historians to get a small idea of evolution itself.

Amber has also been used as a healer for medical purposes. In popular beliefs amber is appreciated as a strong protector and for good luck. It is thought to absorb negative energy and release positive one. It has been used historically as a talisman or an amulet.

The amber we work with is mined in Chiapas, Mexico. It is a high quality amber, 100% natural, not treated like most Baltic amber. It is harder than most other ambers, therefore ideal for carving and jewelry. It comes in different beautiful colors: the most common ones yellow, orange and brown, and the more rare ones cherry red (only found in Chiapas), green and blue.

What does sterling silver mean?
It means .925 parts of pure silver and .075 parts of a different metal, usually copper, giving the silver the needed maleability so it can be worked.

Serpentine looks similar to jadeite, but serpentine is softer, less dense and feels greasy to the touch.
The Mayans and Aztecs believed that jadeite could cure pains in the side of the body.
jadeite was used from prehistoric periods for hardstone carving. Jadeite has about the same hardness as quartz.

Black onyx

Onyx is a banded variety of the oxide mineral chalcedony. Agate and onyx are both varieties of layered chalcedony that differ only in the form of the bands: agate has curved bands and onyx has parallel bands. The colors of its bands range from white to almost every color (save some shades, such as purple or blue). Commonly, specimens of onyx contain bands of black and/or white.
Black onyx is thought to have protective properties and to bring inner strength, self-confidence and mental discipline to its wearer. Additionally, onyx is said to help to release negative emotions and alleviate fear and anxiety. Physically, onyx is believed to help in wound healing, childbirth, eye and ear problems and to benefit the skin, hair, teeth and nails Some cultures consider it to be virtuous and protective.
