Description

Item # 16-394

Antique foot and shoe measurement ruler made by Belcher Bros & Co of New York. Picture no 3 shows the Belcher Bros & Co marking which places its manufacture to the period from 1853 to 1877. it is a rare exmple of a common tool in shoe stores and makers of the period. This appears to be a rare example of such an item by this maker as no listings can be found after extensive search while there are many from other makers.

It is in good condition with clear rulings. The back side is marked in inches while the front side is marked in foot/shoe related units. There is some minor degradation of the finish at the end but the rest of the surfaces are in very good condition. The surfaces have been waxed with a light coating of Butcher's Wax to maintain the finish.

The main beam is 15 1/2 inches long by 3/4 inches wide by 5/16 inch thick. The measuring "Jaws" are 3 inches long and the moving jaw is fitted with brass slider.

The following information was found in the Smithsonian records: Thomas Belcher began making rules in New York in 1821 and was joined by his brother in 1825. The company known as T&W Belcher at this time. In 1831 another brother, Charles, joined the firm and the company name was changed to Belcher Brothers. Around 1841 the manufacturing operations were moved to New Jersey and the firm was then known as Belcher & Brothers. In 1853 some of the sons of the family members joined the company and the name was changed to Belcher Bros & Co, By this time the company had become the largest maker of rules in America but then it was surpassed by Stanley in the 2nd half of the 1800's. Belcher stopped manufacturing in about 1877. Other data seems to indicate the date was about 1885.
