Description

This Toby teapot was made in the 1940s when Japan was "Occupied" after WWII. It was a very short time that the USA occupied Japan.

This jug is clearly marked "Made in Occupied Japan" which makes it particularly valuable. The stamp is only used about 1/2 the time, as manufacturers only needed to declare the goods as "Made in Occupied Japan" instead of plainly "Japan" or "Made in Japan"

A Toby Jug is a caricature ceramic pitcher modeled in the form of a popular character, historical, fictional or generic. It can be a person or animal.

Why is it named "Toby?"

It is believed that it refers to the name Sir Toby Belch in Shakespeare's play, Twelfth Night. It comes from the French word "tope" – to drink hard (i.e. Tope, Toper, Toby).
