Description

Charles Sim Mottram (1852 - 1919) born in Rotherham, Yorkshire, a large town in South Yorkshire in the centre of Britain. The artist began his artistic career from London (Stoke Newington and Hampstead) and ultimately moved to St Ives, Cornwall in 1901 with his wife Sarah and son.

His passion was the British seaside in all it's forms. He has given us detailed views into British Seafaring history, of Britain's relationship with the elements of water and with itself as an island.

It was after his move to St. Ives when he became popular in Europe and North America and has continued right up to the present commanding solid prices from the international auction houses.

In this painting of the 'Mussel Gatherers', that dates around 1886, along with a series of watercolors with 'Gatherers' in their titles, you find people working along the shores of the Atlantic.

What is striking is the fluid movements of water around the people on the rocks and then above them the swarms of seagulls further away. The shipping activity on those calm waters heading towards or away from land and the sky above, is just wonderful.

He has given us such loving details about the waters surrounding England, an element the Brits had conquered and brought into their lives so completely. I wonder if anyone could paint 'outer space' as lovingly as this artist has the sea.

Vintage frame and watercolor are in good condition, ready to hang.
