Gemstone: Turquoise

Precious Single Turquoise Jewelry Set: our small genuine Turquoise Necklace & Earrings 2-piece Jewelry Set will help you build your coordinated jewelry wardrobe, and is a great gift for someone special.

We will hand-select stones that look great together and make a set just for you. Sets will be wrapped in one box as a gift, with ribbon and a small gift card (if you prefer a separate box for each piece, send us a note with your order).

The earrings dangle approx. 1-1/4" (31.75mm) long, with 14k Gold Filled Ear Wires. Each Turquoise is a genuine semiprecious gemstone, unique, approx. 5/16"-3/8" (8-10mm), faceted and bezel-set by hand, in 18k Gold Vermeil, to show off their beauty front and back. We love these genuine Turquoise stones for their natural color, imperfections, and opacity, which is how they look straight from the mine. What we find particularly fun about them is that they are more raw and closer to nature so you know you are getting a true Turquoise stone, completely natural, with all of nature's beauty and imperfections. The stones are natural semi-precious Turquoise, with earth's beauty and imperfections, so you'll know they are real! Each stone is hand-picked by us for its unique beauty, hand-faceted and bezel set in Gold Vermeil. Chains are 14k Gold Filled double rope, finished with a 14k Gold Filled lobster claw clasp. You will receive a necklace and earrings equal in quality and beauty to those shown in the photographs.

Sought-after for its beautiful blue-green color, Turquoise is found in only a few places on earth: dry and barren regions where acidic, copper-rich groundwater seeps downward and reacts with minerals, creating a porous, semitranslucent to opaque compound of hydrated copper and aluminum phosphate (AIG). The color of sky blue Turquoise has a higher percentage of copper; greenish-blue Turquoise has a higher percentage of iron. Turquoise stones range in hue from pale blue to aqua to almost pure green, and can contain flecks of pyrite or veins of limonite, iron oxide, iron pyrite, black chert, or rhyolite.

The gem’s name comes from the French expression pierre tourques, or “Turkish stone,” as stones brought to Europe were from mines in the historical Khorasan Province of Persia. The birthstone for December and July, Turquoise is known as a the "master healer," a holy talisman, bringer of good health, fertility, fortune, and protection from evil,
and helps to foster honest and open communication from the heart.

Turquoise jewelry has been prized for thousands of years: from 5000-year-old strands of beads found in the Maghara Wadi mines on the Sinai Peninsula, stones mined by slaves from ancient Mesopotamian mines taken to Egypt and worn by Pharoahs (hello King Tut!), mentioned in writings by Pliny the Elder, brought to Vienna in the 13th century by Marco Polo from his travels through Persia, prized by Aztec Kings and Incan royalty, and an important ceremonial gem and medium of exchange for Native American tribes in the southwestern US.

Today, genuine Turquoise is quite scarce, found chiefly in mines of Iran, Afghanistan, China, Australia, Chile, Mexico, Arizona, and Nevada. Real Turquoise used for jewelry is commonly oiled, waxed, and made stronger by impregnating silica and resins – all industry-approved methods of stabilizing the soft porous stone. -- GIA, AGTA, and various other sources.

*LOOK FOR REAL TURQUOISE!* We recommend purchasing Turquoise only from reliable jewelers. Much "Turquoise" jewelry on the market these days is imitation (i.e., not real), made of glass, enamel, porcelein, howlite, magnesite, Chalcedony, Jasper, marble, limestone, marble beads or plastics. Imitations create a convincing illusion of real Turquoise stones, with faked cracks and strong turquoise color, and can be called Viennese Turquoise, Hamburger Turquoise, Neolith, or Buffalo Turquoise.
