Pearls are one of the birthstones for the month of June, Pearls are a unique gem as they're the only one that are from living sea creatures and require absolutely no polishing or faceting to show their natural beauty.

To keep your pearls in best possible condition take care to avoid wearing them when washing/bathing and avoid getting perfume on them as these will in time degrade the natural luster

For centuries they have been used as an adornment & were one of the favourite gem materials of the Roman Empire however later in Tudor England the 1500s became known as the pearl age. In the early 1900s the first successful commercial culturing occurred.

PLEASE NOTE

To help identify real pearls here are some tips on how to spot a genuine pearl from a faux Pearl..
*The Quickest way to tell if your pearls are Genuine or fake is to rub two pearls together gently and it feels like a gritty texture of grinding is occurring which is because of the nacre the pearl is made up of, however if you do this with a fake pearl it will just be smooth. The more unorthodox way is to run pearls against your teeth, again you will feel a grit like sensation with your genuine Pearls
*Real Pearls are heavier than faux pearls, if you have real pearls in one hand and faux pearls in the other you will certainly notice the difference
*Temperature; When genuine pearls have not been near the body they will be slightly cold to touch but will warm up to near yet our temperature when wearing them, however a faux pearl will stay around room temperature.
*When have a strand of pearls you will notice slight differences in the size, shape & texture of each one, this is because they occur in nature. Whereas a fake pearl will each be the same size and colour as they are man made.
*Look at the overtone of colour, pearls have a beautiful lustre that occurs naturally whereas faux pearls have have more of a milky overtone.
*Your natural pearls have a reflective quality so when in natural light you should see reflections of light within the lustre on the pearls. Faux pearls are often more dull & generally speaking won't have the reflective qualities
*Real pearls each have there own fingerprint like ridges & pits that naturally occur, look closely at your pearls, even using a magnifying glass and you should see ridges and specific qualities within each pearl.
