Description

Heavy weight vintage boat canvas was used to create this contemporary, stylized Southwestern motif floor cloth of Sandhill Cranes feeding at the Bosque del Apache Nature Refuge. The "Bosque" is in New Mexico near the small town of San Antonio, NM. Bosque del Apache translates as "woods of the Apache" and provides food, protection and shelter for many migratory birds including the Sandhill Cranes who make the Bosque their winter home in our Land of Enchantment. The floor cloth scene was first rough- sketched in chalk and then painted, textured, antiqued and bordered in beige, brown, gold and rust tones . Dimensions: 27" x 45".

What is a floor cloth? Hand painted canvas floor coverings or canvas rugs (also known as oilcloths) evolved in the United States in the 1700's with the early settlers wanting to decorate their new dwellings and having a need to keep out the drafts between the floorboards. Carpets were not readily available and resources scarce. Canvas from worn ship sails was pressed into service and with a little ingenuity and a bit of paint & varnish, "poor man's Orientals" were created.

My floor cloths are:
• Made from heavy weight cotton (vintage boat canvas) with two layers of primer applied to each side and two base coats using waterborne acrylic/latex paints; the corners are mitered, turned & glued; then a design and texturing layer is applied w/acrylic and/or waterborne paints and finally, topped with four coats of waterborne acrylic sealant for a tough, durable and easy to maintain finish - mild soap and water cleanup; a great choice if you have pets and children;
• Best placed on clean, hard surfaces such as wood, laminate,concrete or tile;
• Works of art for use in many areas of the home to add texture, beauty and color--at the kitchen sink, stove, or front door to under the kitchen table or on the back patio or front porch...
• Signed and dated on back. Instructions and care sheet are provided with every floor cloth.
• Created and designed with the Southwest in mind--vibrant, contemporary and not your ancestors' floor cloths!

Floor cloths must be brought to room temperature before unrolling if they have been stored in unheated garage or car, etc. DO NOT FOLD!! Always roll the cloths if you need to move them or store them. They can also be stored flat underneath other carpets. The cloths have been finished with four coats durable acrylic waterborne finish. Damp mop with mild cleanser; you can apply liquid floor wax or paste wax to restore the finish from time to time. Occasionally, natural flaws and folds will appear in the raw canvas but incorporated into the designs they add to the overall character of the piece.
