Description

NOTE: This book has been sold but I keep it up so someone interested can find it (like you!) so that I can know to look for it specifically for them. Of course it won't be the same book but I am good at and love the hunt for books, and can likely find you another copy of that same edition or another beautiful edition of the same book. :) Don't ever hesitate to contact me on sold listings, that's why they are here!

There is no other book like this one.

No, really. You cannot find this book anywhere else unless maybe if you hunt down peoples' personal libraries and make an exhaustive search throughout thrift bookshops that may have it buried in their pulps and other books.

I came upon this one accidentally, and it's taken me a great deal of mulling to decide to sell it at all. A part of me really, really wants to keep it, regardless of how much it is worth, because not only do I absolutely LOVE pulp-ish cover art, but the story itself is so classic and wonderful in timeless literature that you want to own every copy of it you come across once you've read it and fallen wholly in love with the story of Mr. Darcy and Elizabeth Bennet.

I know there is someone out there who feels the exact same way, and they will HAVE to own this unique copy alongside their many other copies, because it is so special in itself, not only just to them, and to own this book is to own an immortal piece of art, and an edition unlike any other.

This would make the Austen fan's birthday--or any other day or occasion--spectacular.

If you are oddly unfamiliar with the story or the author, I can try to summarize them both for you just to give you a head start, but you won't be prepared for the awesomeness that is this book, and the talent that is the writer Jane Austen. There is a reason you recognize her name even if you've never read her. There is a reason she is still talked about, still raved about, and still inspiring new entertainment to this day (adaptations of all sorts, zombies or not) -- and I'll try to articulate this reason.

In quotes.

Let's start with my favorite, because I'm a librarian and rare book lover and seller and I just have to point out that this is in the book, for all you book lovers out there as well:

"I declare after all there is no enjoyment like reading! How much sooner one tires of any thing than of a book! — When I have a house of my own, I shall be miserable if I have not an excellent library." - Mrs. Bingley

There, now I feel better having gotten that AWESOME quote out of the way. Here's one that defines the swoon-inducing and I-want-to-slap-him inducing Mr. Darcy: "But no sooner had he made it clear to himself and his friends that she hardly had a good feature in her face, than he began to find it was rendered uncommonly intelligent by the beautiful expression of her dark eyes. To this discovery succeeded some others equally mortifying. Though he had detected with a critical eye more than one failure of perfect symmetry in her form, he was forced to acknowledge her figure to be light and pleasing; and in spite of his asserting that her manners were not those of the fashionable world, he was caught by their easy playfulness."

Here are a few epic one-liners that show perfectly who Elizabeth the protagonist is and what she stands for:

-"What are men to rocks and mountains?"
-"Do not consider me now as an elegant female intending to plague you, but as a rational creature speaking the truth from her heart."
-“My courage always rises with every attempt to intimidate me.”

And, finally, "In vain I have struggled. It will not do. My feelings will not be repressed. You must allow me to tell you how ardently I admire and love you." - Mr. Darcy

:)

If you love love, you need to read this book. If you don't love love, true love that takes turns and develops in odd ways and causes drama and back-and-forths and torment and heartbreak and pure lust and pure joy, there might be something wrong with you. Buy this book and fix it.

And here's the straight information you might be looking for:

-Full title: Pride and Prejudice
-Author: Jane Austen
-Format: Paperback, first of this edition, pulp-style novel
-Condition: Near mint, if not completely mint edition! Looks like no one has owned it or read it since the day it was published.
-Publisher: Airmont Books
-Copyright: "The special contents of this edition - copyright 1962, Airmont Publishing Co." (The copy is "complete and unabridged" but does have a special introduction)
-Date published: 1962
-Provenance: I found this in a bookshop in southeastern Connecticut just a few weeks ago (Nov 2016) which I only stop in every so often. I was hunting for science fiction pulp novels actually and came across the shop's classics' section which really isn't great, and saw this there between all there really...er, not great copies of books...and Voilà!
-Pricing: This book is incredibly hard to price because it is almost priceless. I don't know what to tell you. I ruminated on this one a lot. There are many factors that go into pricing generally let alone pricing each book specifically, so this one took me a while.

FAQs

Absolutely! I'm willing to do anything to get this book to you, but I will not write on it. If it is not in the condition you want, I know preservation techniques and will certainly oblige as best I can. You just need to let me know.
I will wrap the book any way you want. It is special and so are you, you deserve it! I will also write cards, include photographs, anything you'd like that would make this transaction more, well, you.
I won't tell you how to care for your book, but as to how they are cared for now, they are housed in two places -- some are wrapped in plastic in my main room in the part of the house that used to be a quaint B&B, lined on lovely old wooden bookshelves; others are stacked in piles or leaning on cool, creative and different bookends all round the room, and all are given care, attention, and kept away from my dog :)

Others sit in my library, in built-in authentic 1800s wooden and glass-door library shelves that line the walls in a secluded room in a historic home on the shore. With vintage, warm lamplights over the tiny marble fireplace, the library's windows catch plenty of sunlight--the books are in good homes and will arrive undamaged.
If the book comes later than expected this does not mean it was sent late. Every book is sent within 1-3 business days, unless one of the days is a Sunday, then it could be an extra day. This applies to International orders as well, but they might take longer to get to you than in-country orders. If there is a problem, please bring it up with UPS or see Etsy's policies.
I am more than willing to hunt down a specific book for you. This can take time, however, and would be a matter of personal back-and-forth on the site so you would have to keep in contact. There is no guarantee. I'm good at finding things however, and if I cannot find it to sell to you myself I will direct you to where I can find it online, if I can.

Important to note, however, that I may have it in my holdings already so it ALWAYS helps to check in with me. Listings come up continually, and it may just be waiting here to get processed and put up.
Contact me directly via the site and I will do my absolute best to help correct it. There should be no problems.
Always willing to make new friends and take on new jobs or opportunities -- this business does not stop me from working a full or part time job, and I am currently looking, so please contact me! Dempseylynch@gmail.com. I am definitely interested in talking with you and love meeting new people (especially book lovers of course).
Sure! Although the books are priced the way they are and are worth that amount based on a lot of factors (condition compared to others available online, if there are any available online or if it is the only one, age and whether it is signed or special in some way, etc.) I am always willing to hear you out as to why you think the books price is off, and work with you as best I can. I cannot guarantee the price will change, that is bad for my business, but I will listen to you. Don't be afraid to reach out. The worst that can happen is I will say no.

I put the reasons behind my pricing method for each item at the end of the listing so check that out if you're curious too :)
