Many hundreds of engraved monumental memorials adorn the walls and floors of English churches. The rubbings from them are often referred to as Brass Rubbings and the engraved plates themselves as 'Brasses'.

This rubbing has been created by using a metallic wax compound over a special rag paper. The original engraving is thought to be only one of three that depict the Annunciation. It shows George Rede, then rector in the town of Fovant in Wiltshire, England, kneeling with his rosary, praying to the Virgin Mary. The illustration shows Mary being greeted by Gabriel with the Holy Spirit, represented as a haloed dove, coming out of a cloud. The monumental memorial brass is dated c. 1500.

This rubbing has been taken from a exhibition of facsimilie plates exhibited at The Washington National Cathedral in Washington DC. by The London Brass Rubbing Centre before they took their wonderful and unique collection on a much lauded tour of the USA.

The rubbing measures 15" X 20" and leaves sufficient room around the engraving to enable you to mat and frame under glass. This lovely and historical piece also looks well when hung from wooden dowels or a brass rod.

I will mail this artwork to you in a strong mailing tube and include full insurance cover during transit and enclose a copy of The Historical Notes booklet, published by The London Brass Rubbing Centre. This booklet will not only include historical details about this rubbing of George Rede but also details of all the other lovely plates in The London Brass Rubbing Centre's extensive collection.
