Bob Clampett (1913 – 1984) was one of the pioneers of American animation. In 1935 he designed a fat little pig named Porky and later at Warner Brothers collaborated on the creation of their biggest star, Bugs Bunny. In 1946 he left Warner Brothers to open his own studio where he created a live daily puppet show featuring a sea serpent named Cecil and the serpent’s propeller-and-hat-topped pal, Beany. “Time for Beany” earned Clampett three Emmy awards for Best Children’s program. In 1961 Beany and Cecil debuted on ABC with their own animated show which ran for five years. This adorable print called, “Cecil the Magician” is from the book Beany and His Magic Set that was published in 1953 by Whitman Publishing Co of Racine, Wisconsin.

The print definition and paper quality are typical of that time period, lacking much of the sharp clarity that is available today with offset printing but adds timeless charm to this children’s print. The bright, vibrant colors offer a glimpse into cartoon art created for children during the early 1950’s. “Beany and Cecil” continue to be found in syndication even today.

There is slight yellowing of the paper around the image, in line with a book plate that is almost 60 years old, as well as some damage along the outside edges of the page. The rough edge from the binding has been removed but that is the only "altering" that has taken place (the interior edge is trimmed). Prints are carefully mounted on mats to simplify framing after purchase and to protect the print during shipment. All mat materials are acid and lignin free, the actual print is not archival safe. The original book pages measured 5-1/2 x 6 – 1/4” but the book plate is being sold custom matted to fit in an 8x10 standard frame.
