Description

A stunning vintage Czech Zelezny Brod glass vase, made in Neodymium Alexandrite glass and engraved with a mother and baby bird (stalk or heron) wading in the water. Neodymium glass changes colour depending on the lighting conditions.

It is signed but I am unable to determine the author.

This beautifully shaped vase was designed by Miloslav Klinger for the Zelezny Brod glassworks in Czechoslovakia in the 1960's.

A very similar vase is referenced in Miller's Collectables Handbook & Price Guide 2014-2015 on page 218 where it says "Alexandrite (or Neodymium) glass changes colour from a pale ice blue under fluorescent lighting to this colour [purple] under incandescent lighting. The presence and style of any engraved design affects value considerably. Modern, stylised designs like this [similar vase but with a heron] are much more desirable than simple, naturalistic renderings of flowers." Value £100-£150

A little history about the item (for those who are interested!)

During the communist occupation of Czechoslovakia a huge array of beautiful and innovative pieces were designed and produced. Due to the closed door nature of communism, many of these pieces are only now being discovered and documented.

The vase being sold here is from the Zelezny Brod glassworks, which was also known as Železnobrodské Sklo (ZBS). It consisted of 9 factories in the town of Zelezny Brod, Czechoslovakia.

Miloslav Klinger designed the piece and is renowned for using this type of pulled glass design. He was one of the top designers at Zelezny Brod for over 40 years and designed hundreds of glass pieces, many in association with Josef Cvrcek and Frantisek Kyska.

We hope you found the information interesting and if you have anything to add, please let us know as we are always interested to learn more.
