New York Transit Authority Subway Token Ring

***Please read the entire listing! You may need to leave additional information at time of checkout to properly fulfill your order***

In the subway’s infancy, it only cost five cents to get on a train, in the pre-token days you would just insert a nickel to pass through. In 1948 the fare was raised to ten cents, so the New York City Transit authority re-outfitted the turnstiles to accept dimes. It wasn’t until the city increased the fare to fifteen cents that they encountered a problem. The lack of a fifteen cent coin led to the creation of the subway token.
As children, we regarded tokens with such awe. One hallowed, albeit cumbersome, object was the key to transporting you anywhere in the city within a train’s grasp. At some point in the midst of the transformation to MetroCards, that magical aura was lost, now lying in the realm of memorabilia and fond-yet-distant memories.

Each token used to make these rings have been lightly circulated. They may have minor scratches or nicks but that just adds to the character of the pieces.

Band Width: 6.75 mm to 7.25 mm (Will vary dependent on ring size)

Sizes: US 4.5 - 10

Finishes: Highly polished (Shiny), Combination (blackened only around the details and everything else polished)

Metal Content: brass - This ring may tarnish your finger (green staining). Although relatively harmless, it can be annoying. To help prolong this from happening, these rings are sealed using a clear jewelers grade industrial strength sealant. The sealant may wear off with daily wear as rings see a lot of "action" than most jewelry. Please see our care instructions located in our FAQ on how to help prolong your coin jewelry life.

I suggest having your fingers professionally sized prior to placing your order. I use professional jeweler tools so there are no mistakes. All rings come with lifetime resizing, 1 size up or down (only if within sizing range) FREE. All you are responsible for is shipping to and from my shop.
We gently tuck your item into a tin clear top gift box ready to be gifted as soon as your package is opened. Your purchase also includes care instructions that will provide you with the details to help make your items last a lifetime. For ring purchases, a Buckskin polishing cloth is also included so you can keep that vibrant shine with just a gentle wipe.
Due to the process of turning a coin into a ring a taper or cone shape will be present. The reeded edge or factory edge as I call it is much thicker than the center of the coin, which once punched and folded, the center becomes one side of the band. You cant ever remove the taper fully. However, you can shape the ring so that the taper is hidden within the inner band. I size my rings using the reeded edge then slowly raise the thinner center edge so that the taper is now on the inner band and once placed on your finger, the taper is completely hidden. The taper can be seen only if you are looking from the punched center edge towards the reeded edge, otherwise it is hidden. This causes one side of the ring to be a bit larger than the other
All orders will take 1-3 weeks to create once your order is placed. Please keep this in mind and plan your orders accordingly if it needs to arrive by a certain date. We always do our best to process orders as quickly as possible and if we can lessen this time, we do.
