Pecans, magnolias, mules and family....This evocative Christmas memoir by Lillian Smith recalls the holidays at her family home in Clayton, Georgia. With nine kids, various relatives and many pets in the household, there was a lot of material to draw from.

The last quarter of the book is "Christmas Kitchen Fifty Years Ago" (now 100 years!). It includes rich descriptions of food from Southern kitchens and some family recipes.

Pen and ink illustrations by Constance McMillan.

One early reader described this book as "Soft, tender, funny and strong. A memory that reaches into the past and fills its arms with proofs that people can be compassionate and ridiculous, courageous and playful and quietly good."

Smith is best known for "Strange Fruit," a controversial 1944 novel which explored inter-racial marriage.

CONDITION: Very good. Giftable! Very clean, tight and bright. There is a Meier & Frank (old NW department store) price sticker on rear free endpaper. Only flaw is a dust jacket tear along the back cover fold (see photo #5)
