Description

Den Den

This instrument is known as a den den daiko, Japanese pellet drum, or Chinese den den. It is found in several Asian cultures and and is played by rolling the handle between the palms of your hands which allows the beads to strike the heads on each side. This den den is 9.5" long with a 4" head. It has a henna-stain design on each drum head.
**pictures show front and back of each den den

I hand paint each den den individually with henna. All designs are my own. What is henna, you say? Or maybe you don't, but in the event that you do:

Henna is a natural plant paste made from the henna plant, lemon juice, and assorted oils (the oil(s) depend on the preference of the person mixing it). The raised design that you see on the den den is the dried henna paste. As henna dries, it leaves a beautiful brownish/reddish/sometimes gold-ish stain behind.

If you prefer to use the den den as home decor, you can leave the dried paste on the den den (it will flake off naturally overtime). If you would like the den den as a fully functional instrument (which it is!) you can leave the paste on and let it flake off with use or gently scrape it off with your hands or an old identification or credit card. Either way, the stain lies beneath! So the design you see is permanent :)

Den Den hate the rain! They are natural enemies. It is important that you keep your den den dry.
