This is a hand-engraved and inlaid Laurel medallion for the SCA(*) market. ~20ga thick, 1 3/8" diameter.

The base plate is plain carbon steel, with an upset rim for look and added sturdiness. The work is hammered engraving using small chisels (gravers) to excavate the leaf areas and the crossed branches; then these recesses are inlaid with fine silver and copper using the Japanese hira-zōgan and sēn-zōgan techniques. The base plate is heat blued. There is no solder involved on the medallion except in the twisted silver jump ring.

Heat bluing is a lustre patina. It's a very shallow effect, created by oxide layers of a thickness we could almost measure in atoms. In consequence, the color shifts dramatically depending on the intensity and angle of the light, or whether the steel is oiled (the oil has a different refraction index), etc. The two pictures are of the same piece in different lighting, and the color difference is dramatic.

(*) SCA: Society for Creative Anachronism.
