This is a hand-engraved and inlaid leaf pendant. ~20ga thick, 2 inches long.

The base plate is plain carbon steel, pierced from sheet. The work is hammered engraving using small chisels (gravers) to excavate the veins; then these recesses are inlaid with fine silver using the Japanese sēn-zōgan technique. The base plate is heat blued. There is no solder involved on the leaf.

Heat bluing is a lustre patina. It's a very shallow effect, created by oxide layers of a thickness we could almost measure in atoms. In consequence, the color shifts dramatically depending on the intensity and angle of the light, or whether the steel is oiled (the oil has a different refraction index), etc. The three pictures are of the same piece in different lighting, and the color difference is dramatic.

A jump ring or a sterling silver bail can be added on request at an additional cost. (See "Suspension" under Variations to select this option.)
