Special 15" mandala , vibrant southwest colors, hand painted, original design.

This Star Circle is my contribution to the second 'challenge' on Etsy's Native American forum/thread. The challenge was simply "Anasazi"

The Anasazi or Ancestral Pueblos were an ancient Native American culture centered in the 'Four Corners' region of the South West US. Perhaps best known for their stone and adobe Cliff Dwellings and their mysterious disappearance after hundreds of years in that area.

I see the circle as a symbol of 'the Whole', of Oneness , and the Ancient Ones as ancestors of us all. It also compliments the Kiva, which is part of the Anasazi dwellings, used for spiritual purposes, and was a circular structure.

The spiral sky center has representations of some of their ancient petroglyphs, the sky being 'dream-like' and holding the ancient spirits. I also see the sky as being a portal or link from past to present. The graphic in the very center is taken from a pottery design that I am using as a depiction ( and maybe it really is ) of "Achiyalabopa" : A huge celestial Bird-God of the Pueblo people, with rainbow feathers sharp as knives." I think this is an especially interesting element in that there are other indigenous cultures that have rainbow creatures who play an important part in their religious beliefs.
Spiral symbolizes time, birth-death-rebirth cycle, evolution, continuity, rhythm, breathing, driving energy, Life.

The bright colored dwellings represent the vibrancy of life, the time the Ancient ones were thriving there. They also represent all relations/ all peoples. The front row, sand colored dwellings being present day. And the ladders mark the four directions.

I am really excited about and pleased with this piece, I hope you enjoy it as well .
Thanks so much for looking and enjoying !
