Schmetz discontinued manufacturing needles that fit the Willcox & Gibbs chain stitch sewing machine. These Schmetz needles have the groove all the way up the shaft as required for the machine to slide over the pin in the needle bar. It will fit the older glass tension machine, the automatic and the later electric chain stitch machines. These needles are hard to find.

Mirror smooth Schmetz needles glide through fabric and are superior to the original Willcox & Gibbs needles with a dull finish that does not penetrate all fabrics smoothly. Over the years I have used both original and Schmetz needles in my Willcox & Gibbs machines and discovered the problem of using old dull finish needles, especially on some fabrics and layers. The old original needles were not made smooth and shiny enough, these are the best.

This is for 5 needles Size 80/12 which is the same as the Willcox & Gibbs size 2 needle.

Chain stitch sample on white wool and DMC variegated tatting thread, done on 1903 Willcox & Gibbs chain stitch machine with stitch set to largest, size 12. Sample not included in sale, only 5 needles.

Final picture is me using a Willcox & Gibbs chain stitch machine at the annual Civil War Revisited event in Fresno, CA. I stitch a wavy chain stitch line on a folded strip of fabric as a bookmark and give them to hundreds of children and adults all weekend.

I've written a small book about cleaning and using treadle machines, it has lots of basic information about the different types of treadles you may find.
