Martin Leman, famous for his
highly decorative and stylistic
paintings of cats, has always been a
keen photographer. In Catsnaps he
has selected just a few of the many
photographs taken over the years
that have been inspirational for his
paintings. His wife, Jill, who has
collaborated with him on his two
successful poetry anthologies, The
Perfect Cat and Cat's Companion, has
chosen to complement the
photographs with literary cats from
the prose writings of cat lovers as
diverse as Dr Johnson, Michael
Joseph and Doris Lessing. Some of
the cats, for example Hodge, Calvin
and Foss, are justly famous: others
are not so well known; but all of them
are real, whatever their shape, colour
or size.

Martin Leman, the most
1 VI. sophisticated of'naive'
painters, has an international
reputation. His paintings have been
exhibited in Europe and America and
are in private collections throughout
the world. His books include Comic
and Curious Cats, Starcats and Ten Cats
and Their Tales.
Jill and Martin Leman live in
Islington, London and for part of the
year in St Ives, Cornwall.
