Description

Yellow Poppies on Blue Cotton was inspired by a visit to the Chicago Botanic Gardens during the summer of 2013, where a vibrant field of poppies shimmered in the afternoon sun.

Letterpress printing is a form of relief printing which uses a printing press. This artisanal form of printing uses the same techniques developed by Johannes Gutenberg in the 15th century. Each color is applied separately using movable wood and metal type, photo-etched zinc “cuts”, polymer plates, wood cuts or linoleum blocks. For Yellow Poppies, I start by creating a watercolor painting. I scan and digitally separate the painting into a series of overlapping colors. In this case I used five different colors. I create polymer plates from my digital files. These plates are locked onto the bed of a Vandercook press, inked, and transferred onto paper through the application of pressure.

Papermaking is even older than printing, originating in China. Plant fiber (or natural fabric material) is beaten to form a pulp, mixed with water, and formed using a mould and deckle. The cotton fiber used in this paper was made from recycled dress shirts.

This artwork was printed at Spudnik Press in Chicago on paper made at Zenith Art Studio in River Forest. The print comes signed and numbered (edition of 32) with a one-page description of the process.

Note: Due to the nature of the printing process, slight variations in each individual artwork will occur. These contribute to the uniqueness of each piece in the edition.

Artwork Size: 8.5 x 11 inches (approximate); 21.6 x 27.9 cm.
Package weight = 5.25 oz.; 149 g. (ships flat in a cushion mailer with cardboard support)
