Description

Lourdes Jubilee Medals, 50th Anniversay In Aluminium and 100th Anniversay Silver Plated On Copper, Both With 18 Inch Silver Chain

This beautiful silver plated medal of The Virgin Mary has the image of Saint Bernadette as well as the scene at the grotto at Lourdes on the reverse. The inscription is clear that it was made in 1958 to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the appearance of The Virgin Mary at Lourdes.

It measures 2 cm by 2 cm and is silver plated onto copper. It is in superb condition, almost as sharp as the day it was first struck.

The second medal is the 50th anniversary medal. On the front is the depiction of the statue that stands in the grotto at Lourdes and the words in the halo say "I am the immaculate conception". Below is the triple crown and keys which is the symbol of Lourdes.

On the reverse is the scene at the grotto and below the symbol of Notre Dame De Lourdes.

The inscription reads:

"50th anniversary of the 18 appearances of The Blessed Virgin to Bernadette Soubirou."

What is really unusual about this medal is that it made from aluminium and is in fabulous condition. It was only at the end of the 19th century that aluminium was able to be extracted reasonably easily. Prior to that it was the most expensive metal in the world.

Napoleon Bonaparte had a dinner service made from it and only the most prestigious guests were allowed to use it. Ordinary nobles and dignitaries had to make do with gold.

This medal was struck in 1908 and so must have been very expensive when it was made.

The other thing about this form of light aluminium is that it oxidises really easily and many of these old medals are in very bad condition but this one is almost perfect.

It measures 6 cm by 3.5 cm and weighs almost nothing.

Please note that all medals, pendants, crosses or other items on this site are vintage or antique and have been previously owned and loved which is reflected in their condition. Where there is any significant damage I will mention it in the description or clearly photograph it.

Shipping policies

Delivery is almost always through the French Postal Service using the Petit Packet Prioritaire system for parcels up to 2 kilos. Above that weight it has to be the Collissimo service and where that is the case the postage is considerably more and this will be noted in the delivery cost.

Should insurance or tracking be required please let me know at the time of purchase and I will get a quote for you. Tracking is standard with Collissimo but an extra with the first service.

We are in rural France and they have many public holidays so although I try to send packages out within three working days of purchase it is not always possible. Occasionally also, snow or bad weather can cause delays.

Post within Europe is usually reasonably quick but can take up to several weeks to the USA or China.

Please note that customs regulations differ from country to country and it is for the buyer to ensure that any customs or other duties levied by their country of residence is paid. I cannot accept any responsibility for that.

It is important to note that insurance will only be paid by the carrier if the customer either refuses the package or inspects it before the deliverer leaves and notes any damage found. If this procedure is not adhered to the carrier will not pay a claim and in those circumstances I cannot be held responsible for any damage or loss discovered after the deliverer has gone.

So if you notice that there is damage to the packaging of any item please refuse the delivery and it will be returned to me at which point I will be able to make a claim on behalf of me and you.

Additional policies

There are no guarantees with our listings as most are very old. Please take careful note of the descriptions and photographs, do your research where required. I do as much research as I can and where I have information that I think will be helpful to a buyer I will include it in the description. For example if I know that an item is being sold for considerably more than my listing price I will enclose a link to the relevant website.

FAQs

The French post office estimates 10-12 working days to North America and 12-15 working days to Australia. That, of course, ignores strikes and other possible delays like a hold up at customs in the receiving country. In my experience it is sensible to allow 3 weeks to North America and four weeks to Australia.
