PROVENANCE:

This emblem pays homage to the French, female warrior and Catholic Saint, Jeanne D'Arc (Joan of Arc in English). She is being depicted holding her shield (right) and battle standard (left). The design and tooling for this emblem were created over 100 years ago in France. These were often made into brooches by soldering a "c" clasp and hinged pin on the back. They were then plated with what the French refer to as "argent massif" or solid silver. This particular piece was made in France. This emblem is new, old stock, meaning it's been sitting on a stockroom shelf for years.

TO FINISH:

You have two options. 1) Don't clean the piece. Take advantage of the natural coppery brown patina that's taken years to develop. Buff the piece lightly, for several minutes with #0000 steel wool to bring out golden highlights. Then seal it with Renaissance™ or another microcrystalline wax. 2) To give the piece the appearance of solid gold, use the cleaning method below.

TO CLEAN:

The best way is to soak for 10 minutes (more if necessary) in hot brass pickle. The kind I use is called Rio Kleen Nickel Pickle for nickel alloys, brass, bronze and copper from www.riogrande.com. After pickling, the brass is going to have a matte, reddish tint because the pickle removes the zinc from the surface of the brass and leaves the copper. After the piece has been rinsed off, soak it in a solution of 2 parts hydrogen peroxide and 3 parts white vinegar for 20 to 30 minutes. This will leave the piece with a clean, golden color. Then seal it with Renaissance™ or another microcrystalline wax.

Merci beaucoup :)
