The pairing off of celebrities and cigarettes - it has always been thus. Even before there were movies, there were cigarette cards picturing stage actors and actresses. By the 1920s, most movies were silent, black and white productions. Actors of the era had to pantomime and over-emote to get their message across to their audience. Some of the favorite performers of this era were Charlie Chaplin, Mary Pickford, and Douglas Fairbanks and Rudolph Valentino. Their "star quality" engendered a loyal following of repeat customers to the theaters of the time. In fact, people couldn't get enough of them and their adoration took the form of seeking photos and mementos of their favorite actors as well as their autographs.

Up for sale is a vintage cigarette card from the 1920s, featuring Irene Castle of Hodkinson Pictures, a glamorous actress of the silent screen (#21) and star of such features as "Sylvia of the Secret Service" and The Girl From Bohemia." On the back of the card is a short biography of her background and career credits, as well as some personal stats. The card is manufactured by Schinasi Brothers, Inc., 1767 Broadway, New York City for Egyptian Prettiest Cigarettes at Factory No. 485, 2nd District, New York and was packed in with the cigarettes as an incentive/souvenir. The card measures 2 1/2" X 3 1/4" and is in very good vintage condition, with relatively crisp edges and corners and the original glossy finish, though ever so slightly bowed with age. The number 123520 is rubber-stamped in purple ink on the back of the card.

Please note: the box is not included in this sale.

In the early 1940s, the advent of World War II caused the discontinuation of cigarette card production. These cards were considered non-essential and a waste of valuable paper. They never really re-emerged, nor were popularized in the same way, after the war ended.
