Description

This a beautiful British Tan leather Coach Carrier in a slightly distressed condition due to a water stain on the rear bottom quarter of the bag and without the strap. The creed bears registration number 033-6046, has the raised LEATHERWARE logo which, according to the Coach Authentication experts means this bag was made in New York City.

The Coach Carrier is another Coach bag exhibiting an old style in a new world. Like the Musette, Courier and Prairie Bag this bag looks like something that you would see an early American or French pioneer carrying while hiking across the country.

The Carrier is a large unisex bag that is suitable for use by any professional who needs to carry a laptop, books and files to accomplish their daily tasks. It has a flap over cover that is secured by dual solid brass turnlock closures. At 5 inches wide it has more carrying capacity than most other Coach briefcases. It has plenty of pockets inside and out to keep you organized. There is a full length slip pocket on the outside rear of the bag that can take on legal pads, files and similar items. There are two spacious pockets immediately under the flap over cover that can handle smart phones, wallets, keys, staplers and hardware peripherals. , The main compartment is large enough to handle books, files and laptops. It has a a full 5 inches. in business or for pleasure. It has a a soft reinforced padded leather handle for carrying by hand. This bag is missing the 46 inch adjustable strap that came with this bag.

Dimensions

Length: 17.5 inches
Width: 10.5 inches
Height: 5 inches

Strap is missing

To the casual observer, the Carrier looks like the Coach Musette but the two have some definitive differences which had to be pointed out to me by my friend and Coach mentor Diane. The Carrier is often confused with a ‘Musette’ by those selling this bag. However, there are differences both size and features. The Musette is smaller at 16" x 9" x 4" while the Carrier is 17.5 x 10.5 x 5". Moreover, the Carrier has a full length back slip pocket while the Musette has no back slip pocket. I can track the Musette as far back as 1981 which is as far back as my catalogs go. However, according to my catalog collection, the Carrier was introduced in the Coach 1987 Holiday catalog.

We have a vintage Coach catalog from 1987 that lists this bag. It verifies that the bag we have listed had the name, style number, dimensions and other characteristics described in our listing, According to our vintage catalog, Coach offered this bag for $256 in 1987 which is equivalent to $555 in 2018 dollars when adjusted for inflation. It was available in the following colors: Black, British Tan, Burgundy , and Mocha. We would be happy to show you our vintage catalog on request.

Condition of this Carrier

This Carrier is in good condition, but, it has experienced some significant staining. on the bottom rear quarter of the bag. See photo 4 and middle collage photos in photo 5. It is also missing the crossbody strap. There is a small tear in the interior. [See collage photo 8] This bag is priced at about half the price of a carrier in better condition for that reason. However, the bag has no rips, tears, or holes that permeate the bag and is structurally sound. There are also the typical scuffs and scratches you find on a bag this age. Please see photos and ask for more if you need them.

THE FACTORY

This bag was made in the NYC Coach Factory which means it is in the class of the most sought after vintage Coach bags. Coach no longer produces bags in the U.S.A. and the Factory is gone. The quality of the bags manufactured at the Coach NYC factory and the skills of the leather workers who produced them was memorialized in a book released in 1977 entitled "The Factory". Although commissioned by the owners of Coach, it is a testimonial to the skill and diversity of their work force. You can read about them in this book: The Factory: Portrait of a Leathergoods Factory in Downtown New York City; Pictures by Jeremy Lezin- Words by Miles Cahn; July 1977

Please visit our shop and check out the other professional gear and briefcases available. We have plenty of Coach products, including some rare NYC Coach bags from the 1970's. We also have briefcases, attache's and messenger bags manufactured by Hartmann, Fossil, Hidesign, Goldpfeil, and other well known manufacturers.

GUARANTEED AUTHENTIC OR ALL MONEY BACK. We understand there are counterfeits and knockoffs of vintage products by well known manufacturers for sale all over the internet and in other market places. One procedure we use is to research authenticity through vintage manufacturer catalogs and to report our research in the listing. Sometimes we include a snippet from the catalog to corroborate our research and educate you about the history of the bag. The purpose of reporting what the manufacturer says about its product in the catalog is to verify our research on the authenticity and to educate you about how a vintage product was portrayed in the past. It is not intended to hold our shop out as a representative of the manufacturer. However, if it turns out we are wrong or our research is not correct we guarantee that if we sell you a product represented to be manufactured by a reputable company like Coach, Cole Haan, Ghurka, Filson, Christian Dior, Hartmann, Gucci, or any other company and you have competent evidence that the product is not authentic we will refund your purchase price and delivery cost. In addition, we will pay for return postage.
