This a beautiful British Tan leather Coach Carrier in a slightly distressed condition due to a water stain on the rear bottom quarter of the bag and without the strap. The creed bears registration number 033-6046, has the raised LEATHERWARE logo which, according to the Coach Authentication experts means this bag was made in New York City.
The Coach Carrier is another Coach bag exhibiting an old style in a new world. Like the Musette, Courier and Prairie Bag this bag looks like something that you would see an early American or French pioneer carrying while hiking across the country.
To the casual observer, the Carrier looks like the Coach Musette but the two have some definitive differences which had to be pointed out to me by my friend and Coach mentor Diane. The Carrier is often confused with a ‘Musette’ by those selling this bag. However, there are differences both size and features. The Musette is smaller at 16" x 9" x 4" while the Carrier is 17.5 x 10.5 x 5". Moreover, the Carrier has a full length back slip pocket while the Musette has no back slip pocket. This is what coach had to say about the Carrier back in the day:
"New No 9800 Carrier Bag
"Just introduced this extra large bag for men and women has already gained favor among consumers who shop our Coach Stores. Appreciated for its versatility as a business brief and as a day-today- bag – it is designed for anyone who carries a lot in the course of the day. Its full 5" width accommodates a large number of legal size files as well as overnight essentials. A full-length outside back pocket keeps notepads and magazines handy. The two room gusseted pockets under the front flap and the inside drop pocket keep smaller items organized. The 46" detachable shoulder strap adjusts with solid brass buckles.
"Dimensions 17.5 x 10.5 x 5"
Black, British Tan, Burgundy , Mocha" [ See attached collage picture # 5 above showing a copy of the 1987 Holiday Catalog listing of the "New" Carrier where it is listed on the same page as a Musette.]
Condition of this Carrier
This Carrier is in good condition, but, it has experienced some significant staining. on the bottom rear quarter of the bag. See photo 4 and middle collage photos in photo 5. It is also missing the crossbody strap. However, the bag has no rips, tears, or holes and is structurally sound. There are also the typical scuffs and scratches you find on a bag this age. Please see photos and ask for more if you need them.
Significance of NYC Manufacture
This Coach leather bag is one of the most sought after Coach products by collectors because it is a "New York City Bag". These are some of the highest quality Coach products. "New York City" bags were made in the original Coach Factory in New York City that operated from the late 1960's through the mid 1980's. Consequently, they are disappearing at an alarming rate and when you buy a New York City Coach bag you are buying more than an accessory, you are making a potential investment.
Please visit our shop and check out the other professional gear and briefcases available. We have plenty of Coach products, including some rare NYC Coach bags from the 1970's. We also have briefcases, attache's and messenger bags manufactured by Hartmann, Fossil, Hidesign, Goldpfeil, and other well known manufacturers.https://www.etsy.com/shop/ProVintageGear?ref=search_shop_redirect
