Description

“We must not look at goblin men,
We must not buy their fruits:
Who knows upon what soil they fed
Their hungry thirsty roots?”
“Come buy,” call the goblins
Hobbling down the glen...

"Goblin Market" was written by Christina Rossetti and first published in 1862. The poem is teeming with imagery and symbolism, true to the nature of the Pre-Raphaelite era in which it was written. It is about two sisters, Laura and Lizzie, who are enticed by the calls of the goblin merchants, who sell fruits in fantastic abundance, variety and flavor. Laura succumbs to the temptation of the forbidden fruits, and Lizzie tries to help her fallen sister.

This book is a personal project of mine, the product of many years work, an opportunity to explore the imagery found in Rossetti's poem. I squeezed painting time in between my regular commercial obligations, and slowly amassed a large collection of images. The time finally arrived to assemble these images into a coherent presentation to share with the world, and the result is this fine "Goblin Market" book.

100 drawings and watercolor paintings packed into an 88 full-color pages. 10x12 inches, hardcover with a printed dust jacket and an introduction written by Charles Vess.

•Book is signed by artist Omar Rayyan.
•For an additional price, I can do a sketch on the first page, just choose the "signed and sketch" option.

I teach a class on fairy tales and love The Goblin Market by Rosetti. This is an incredible visualization of her words and I love to notice new details when I pick it up from the coffee table. It sits with other versions of this tale, from a story in Emily's collection Through The Woods, to Labyrinth. This is a masterpiece!
